Newborn Photography FAQ
There is nothing quite like the first weeks in a newborn baby’s life. Never again will the features of your little one change so quickly. Newborn Photography is a specialty that captures the details of a new baby’s journey in life and the beginning of a new family’s journey together. This is a priceless and fleeting time to be savored and cherished for years to come with professional fine art photographs.
Before your newborn session:
When should I book my newborn photography session?
The earlier the better! We recommend that you schedule your newborn session PRIOR to your baby’s birth to ensure we will have a date open for you. Contact us during your second trimester and we’ll pencil you in for a date range around your due date. We ask that you call or email us as soon as you can after your baby is born to set up your session time. Occasionally we have openings for last-minute sessions, but we can make no guarantees.
What if my baby is early or late? How do we set a date?
We know that very few babies (5% to be exact) are born on their due date. That is why we book a tentative session date based on your due date and revise it after you give birth. We ask that you contact us in the first couple days after your little one arrives and we will finalize a date & time. If you are having a scheduled induction or c-section, we can set the date ahead of time.
When is the best time to have my newborn photographed?
The best time to photograph a newborn baby is between 5-10 days old. At this age, they are very sleepy, tiny and can curl into the beautiful newborn poses you see in our portfolio.
My baby is already born. Is it too late to schedule a newborn session?
No! While we generally book newborn sessions many months in advance, given the necessarily fluid nature of scheduling newborn sessions, we sometimes have last-minute openings. Moreover, while we recommend that newborn sessions take place during the first two weeks of life, we are always happy to photograph older newborns with the understanding that it may not be possible to achieve the type of images that work with a very young newborn.
Where are your photography sessions held?
We come to your home! We want to make your life as easy as possible and we know it is really tough to get out of your house with a newborn. We want you to relax while we do all the work.
What can I expect from you?
From the beginning, we are here to answer any questions you may have and to guide you through the entire process. We will make sure you have all of your questions answered and know what to expect from us before you book your session. After you book, we will do a pre-session consultation over the phone or by email (whichever works best for you). We will design your session around your needs and will keep you involved in the process. Lastly, all of your final products will be delivered to your home and we will make sure everything is to your expectations.
Day of your newborn session:
How long is a newborn photography session?
Newborn sessions typically last about 2-3 hours, which includes the time it takes us to set up and break down our equipment. We create a calm and relaxing environment and I promise that end result is well worth the time. Please know that we do not mind waiting for you to nurse, change, or soothe your little one.
What should I have on hand?
You want to have some basics such as extra diapers, wipes, and a pacifier (if you use one) on hand. Also, any special outfits or props should be ready to go.
How do I prepare for your arrival?
A couple days before the session, we will send you an email with everything you need to know to prepare for the session. It includes information such as how to prepare your baby, when to feed them before the session, what to wear, and some small tips on creating the best environment for the session.
What should we wear?
Simple is best. We photograph newborns wearing nothing at all or with minimal clothing. If you have special outfits you would like your newborn to wear, we are happy to accommodate, but keep in mind that numerous clothing changes can be disruptive to newborns. We recommend that the rest of the family wear clothing that coordinates without matching exactly. Children should wear clothes that they like and in which they are comfortable, although it is generally best to avoid busy patterns and logos. We’re happy to work with you to select clothing for your session, and will also accommodate clothing changes if you’d like a variety of looks.
Do you bring props to the session?
We photograph newborns with minimal props, and we prefer any props to be objects that have special meaning to you. Please let us know if you have any personal items you’d like to incorporate. Safety always comes first, so we don’t photograph babies in glass bowls or in positions that could be harmful.
I want pictures taken with a family heirloom or blanket that my mom made for the baby. Is that ok?
Of course!! We would be happy to fit your special items into the session!
After your newborn session:
When do I get to see my final images?
About 4 weeks after your session (usually sooner depending on how busy we are) we will have your images completed and uploaded to your online gallery and your USB drive delivered to you (either by mail or delivery if you are local). We also offer prints, gallery wraps, canvass prints, albums, birth announcements and other products of all your images.
Will the photos be public on your website?
We never post any revealing or nude photos publicly on our website or blog. There is a chance that selected photos from your session will be used in our galleries or blogs, unless otherwise specifically requested.
What products do you offer?
We offer digital images, prints, gallery wrapped canvases, heirloom quality albums, custom birth announcements and holiday cards and much more. We sometimes offer seasonal products and if you are looking for something specific that is not on my list of offerings, we would be happy to give you a price quote.
How do I get my final products?
They will be delivered directly to your home by mail unless you would like to meet in person (if you are local). Most products are delivered to you about 2-3 weeks after your order is placed. It could be longer for some custom products such as albums, which could take up to 8 weeks.
What if I need to reschedule?
We understand things come up and sometimes a date no longer works especially if you book far in advance, so we’re happy to change the date or time for you as long as your new date/time is available. We do request that you contact us as soon as you know that you need a change of date as we book weeks and sometimes even months in advance, especially around the holidays, so we need to also make sure we have your new date available.
