Maternity Photography FAQ


When should I schedule my session?

Every pregnancy is different, but between 30-36 weeks is ideal. The best time to shoot is when you are nice and round (remember, these are the kinds of photos you want to look round in!), but not so late in the pregnancy that you are totally uncomfortable moving and posing. You also obviously don't want to schedule too late, in case of an an early arrival.

Will the photos be public on your website?

We never post any revealing or nude photos publicly on our website or blog. There is a chance that selected photos from your session will be used in our galleries or blogs, unless otherwise specifically requested.

Can my partner be in the photos?

Yes, of course! Any family that you would like in the photos may join the shoot. This is a beautiful and joyous time of celebration in a family, which we love to document.

Do I have to show my bare belly?

That's what most mothers choose to do, but a nice maternity session can be done with a cozy shirt or dress which shows the curve of your belly.

Do I have to be nude?

Not at all. All of our maternity sessions are customized and tailored to the wants and needs of each client. Some clients prefer clean and simple artistic nude photographs and wraps, while others prefer to wear less revealing outfits or to be fully clothed. It is completely up to you and your comfort level.

What should I bring?

We don't force a lot of our own props into your session. I would much prefer that you bring items that have some meaning or nostalgia to you: special baby blankets, the cutest stuffed animal the baby has received, something with the baby-to-be's name on it, tiny baby shoes, etc.

I'm a little shy, will the photographer be a male?

This is a question we often get asked. We are a husband and wife team and always do sessions together. Your photographer is a male and the assistant/poser is a female. The photographer will even turn his back or leave the room if it would make you more comfortable when changing poses or clothing. Many of our maternity clients have commented on how relaxed and discreet our service is. Of course, you may want to include your husband/partner in the photo shoot and that is also completely fine. If you’d like to, and if your husband/partner isn't available on the day of your shoot, feel free to have a friend with you during the photo shoot instead.

What if I get tired during the photoshoot?

As parents ourselves we know how tiring your pregnancy can be, so we take the time you need at your convenience. If you need to take a break that is fine. We recommend that you rest fully 2 hours before we arrive to make sure you are at your best.

How soon should I schedule my session?

It’s never too early to schedule your maternity session. We usually book at least 6-8 weeks out and if you’re needing a weekend appointment it is especially important to book early as our weekend availability is limited and these spots go fast.

Do you have a studio location?

No, we prefer to only shoot on-location. Shooting on location provides a more personal feel to your photos. Newborn sessions are held in the comfort of your own home, which allows you some time to relax without having to pack up baby, and to not have to worry about keeping dad's and siblings entertained. Shooting in your home also allows us to capture one of a kind images that cannot be re-created in a portrait studio by incorporating elements of your home.

This is my first professional photography experience. Will you guide me and help me pose?

You are in good hands and we want to make sure that you will have the best selection of artistic images. We will be guiding you throughout your session, adjusting your hair, draping you, helping with outfits and making sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.

I would like to take similar images/poses that I saw in your portfolio. Can we do that?

Yes. You can pick your favorite lighting/backdrop set ups and poses from our portfolio and you are welcome to bring your own ideas as well.

What if I need to reschedule? 

We understand things come up and sometimes a date no longer works especially if you book far in advance, so we’re happy to change the date or time for you as long as your new date/time is available.  We do request that you contact us as soon as you know that you need a change of date as we book weeks and sometimes even months in advance, especially around the holidays, so we need to also make sure we have your new date available.
